National association awards Heflin coaching honor

Friday, July 18, 2008

Lone Oak tennis coach Larry Heflin has been named the National High School Athletic Coaches Association’s Coach of the Year in his sport at the 43rd annual meeting in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Heflin was chosen from eight candidates in tennis and was one of 18 winners in the NHSACA annual awards banquet.

The award recipients are evaluated on longevity, professional service, win-loss percentage, championship years, and professional awards. Every state in the nation is provided opportunity to nominate candidates for evaluation for the award.

Heflin has coached the Lone Oak program for 35 years winning nine Kentucky girls championships and finishing runners-up six times. He has been named the state Coach of the Year multiple times and won the Garnis Martin Outstanding Coach Award in 2006, awarded annually by the Kentucky High School Athletic Director’s Association and the Kentucky High School Coaches Association.
